October 7, 1981: Egypt’s Parliament endorses Vice-President Hosni Mubarak as the sole candidate to succeed the assassinated President Anwar Sadat. Interim President Sufi Abu Taleb issued a decree appointing Mubarak Prime Minister as well as Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, giving him immediate control over the nation.
