Description

August 24, 1983: President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi, 59, is nominated as the sole candidate for the presidency. A trained teacher, Moi served as Rift Valley LEGCO representative and championed against emergency and called for the election of more African representatives, founder KADU, Lancaster House conference delegate, minister in the ministries of education, local government and Home Affairs and Vice president. He rose to presidency in 1978 after the death of Kenya’s first president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and ruled uninterrupted up to 2002. Here, Moi takes the oaths of allegiance and office for a second five-year term.
